When our clients found out baby #5 was on the way, they knew it was time to get creative with their home’s layout—and fast. The original primary bedroom-turned-kids’ bedroom suddenly had a new destiny: a cozy, smartly designed bunk room for three energetic boys.
At our firm, we specialize in large-scale remodels and full-service interior design, and this project was the perfect opportunity to blend thoughtful planning with playful charm. We had one goal: create a space that feels youthful now, but with built-in flexibility for the boys as they grow. And we had one deadline: get it done before the baby arrives. (Spoiler alert: We made the deadline Mom gave us but Baby George beat us by one week.)
Here’s how we transformed a colorful bedroom into a tailor-made haven for three little adventurers—with a soft blue and white color palette, personalized touches, and clever functionality in every corner.

Repurposing a former primary bedroom came with a few unique advantages. For one, the room already had generous square footage and large windows that bathed the space in natural light. But what once housed a king bed and a pair of nightstands needed to become something entirely different—a tripledecker dreamland of bunk beds, play zones, reading nooks, and hidden storage.
Our design plan started with the essentials: custom built-in bunks with drawers below for clothing and toy storage, a shared but smartly sectioned closet, and individual lighting and privacy solutions for each boy. Every design decision was made with durability, adaptability, and a touch of magic in mind.
The Palette: Soft Blues, Cloud Whites, and a Hint of Whimsy
We chose a soft, calming blue and white color scheme as the backdrop for the room—a gentle nod to tradition with enough freshness to feel current. The pale sky tone on the walls paired with crisp white cabinetry keep the space feeling bright and clean.
This color palette does double duty: it’s soothing enough to encourage winding down at bedtime, but it also lends itself well to imaginative play. From pirates sailing the high seas to astronauts floating through space, this room is the kind of blank canvas that encourages big dreams.
And don’t worry—we kept fingerprints in mind. Durable, washable fabrics and wipeable finishes were non-negotiables in a room that will be home to three young boys.

Built-In Bunks with Personality and Purpose
The heart of the room is the custom built-in bunk system. We designed it to sleep three comfortably—no wobbly ladders or creaky frames here. Each bunk has its own reading sconce, electrical outlet, and shelf for water bottles, books, and (let’s be honest) eventually a phone or tablet.

The beds are tiered but not too high, with safety rails that blend seamlessly into the design.
Underneath the bunks? Generous drawers, built right into the base. Perfect for housing out-of-season clothes, extra bedding, and secret treasures (because every kid needs at least one drawer full of “very important” things).
Light, Privacy, and Independence
We believe that even kids deserve some autonomy in their space. That’s why each bunk features its own independently controlled sconce—no more arguments over who left the light on. The sconces are dimmable too, so the boys can decide if they want full brightness for reading or a cozy glow for drifting off to sleep.
In addition to individual lighting, we installed custom drapery panels for each bed. These are operated with simple pulls that allow each child to close off their space for quiet time or privacy. It’s a small detail, but one that gives a big sense of ownership and independence—two things growing kids truly value.

A Reading Nook Built for Quiet Moments
Opposite the bunks, we designed a custom window seat. It’s the perfect spot for reading books, daydreaming, or even sneaking in an afternoon nap.
We intentionally chose the window seat location for its natural light and quiet vibe. It gives the boys a place to settle down during what we affectionately call the “pre-bedtime chaos” hour. It’s also a great spot for parents to join in storytime—or just observe the action while enjoying five minutes of relative peace.

A Custom Closet with Room to Grow

Let’s talk closets. This room originally had two small closets typical of a century home, but that wasn’t the right fit for three boys with ever-growing collections of clothes, toys, and gear. So we tore it out and started fresh with a fully custom built-in closet system.
The new design includes triple hanging sections (no more fighting over hangers), dedicated shelves for shoes and sports equipment, and even a top shelf that’s perfect for off-season storage or baby hand-me-downs. The finish matches the soft white millwork throughout the room, blending functionality with style.
Just in Time for Baby #5
We finished the final styling touches and install the very same week our clients welcomed their fifth child into the world. Talk about timing! With the boys happily settled into their new space, the parents could focus on the new baby—without worrying about bedroom musical chairs or sibling turf wars.
The bunk room quickly became one of the boys’ favorite spaces in the house. Not only does it make bedtime smoother (most nights), but it also serves as a daytime play zone, quiet retreat, and memory-maker all rolled into one.

Design That Grows with Your Family
This project was the perfect example of how smart design can support a growing family’s evolving needs. By transforming an underutilized space into a functional, beautiful room that works for kids now—and teens later—we were able to give our clients both peace of mind and a design they truly love.
If you’re facing your own version of the “baby-on-the-way room shuffle,” or simply want to create a custom space for your kids that blends charm, function, and long-term flexibility, we’d love to help. Because the best kind of design isn’t just pretty—it’s personal.
