When it comes to cozy, nothing quite beats the glow of a fireplace. But in today’s world of clean living, smart homes, and eco-conscious upgrades, traditional wood-burning fireplaces aren’t always the dream they used to be. Smoke, soot, and hauling logs in your favorite cashmere sweater? Hard pass.
So when our clients asked us to redesign their dated fireplace to reflect a more modern, low-maintenance lifestyle—while honoring their love of Southwest design—we knew exactly where to start: by trading in the wood for something a little more…magical.
Enter: the water vapor fireplace.

Out with the Old (Soot), In with the New (Steam)
Originally, this Lake Erie home had a wood-burning fireplace nestled in a dated stone surround. While it served as a central design element, it also came with the usual headaches: smoke stains, chimney maintenance, and an ever-present stack of firewood that felt more “campground” than contemporary.

Our clients were ready for a cleaner look—literally. They wanted the ambiance of fire without the mess or maintenance. And they weren’t alone. More homeowners are turning to alternative fireplace technologies, especially in luxury homes where air quality, safety, and flexibility are paramount.
That’s where the water vapor fireplace comes in.
Why They Made the Switch
This wasn’t just about aesthetics (though we’ll get to that Southwest stunner in a minute). The couple had two specific priorities:
- Enjoy the ambiance year-round, even in the heat of summer, without heating up the room or spiking their A/C bill.
- Create a safe environment for their young grandchildren, who love to toddle around the living room without supervision being a constant stressor.
A traditional fireplace—wood-burning or gas—just didn’t meet those needs. The water vapor unit gave them everything they wanted: flickering “flames” on demand, total safety for little hands, and no added heat unless they wanted it. It’s ambiance without obligation.
What Is a Water Vapor Fireplace?
Picture this: wisps of “flame” that dance and flicker just like the real thing—except they’re made from ultra-fine water mist and LED lighting. No gas lines. No chimney. No smoke. Just pure visual magic and a surprising amount of warmth (both aesthetic and emotional).

These fireplaces operate by heating distilled water into a vapor that catches and reflects light, creating a convincing flame effect. It’s a showstopper—especially when paired with a sleek custom surround and Southwest-inspired accents.
Benefits of a Water Vapor Fireplace
- Enjoyable Year-Round
Since it produces no heat unless desired, the couple can enjoy the look and feel of a glowing fire in the middle of August without breaking a sweat. Think summer cocktails by the “fire”—no firewood, no sweat, just vibes. - Safe for Grandchildren
Got kids? Pets? A strong desire to never yell, “Don’t touch that!” again? Water vapor fireplaces are cool to the touch, making them a dream for families or anyone who values peace of mind. - No Venting Required
Since there’s no real flame, there’s no need for gas lines or a chimney. This allows total freedom in placement—you can even float it in the middle of a room if you’re feeling bold. - Low Maintenance
Say goodbye to ash cleanup, chimney sweeping, and soot-stained walls. All you need to do is refill the water tank and maybe wipe it down once in a while. - Eco-Friendly
No emissions, no fossil fuels, no problem. These fireplaces are a beautiful way to heat your space without harming the environment. - Customizable Looks
From linear modern builds to traditional stone surrounds, you can tailor the design to fit your aesthetic—which is exactly what we did for this project.

A Touch of the Southwest on the Shores of Lake Erie
While Lake Erie isn’t exactly known for saguaro cacti or desert sunsets, our clients were drawn to the earthy warmth and texture of Southwest design. Think terracotta tones, smooth plaster finishes, woven textiles, and natural wood elements.
For the fireplace surround, we opted for muted, textured porcelain 12×24 tile that echoes the sands seen throughout New Mexico and Arizona. We installed the tile in a vertical orientation to draw the eye up to the 20’ ceiling. The remodeled adjacent nook features wood shelves in a warm walnut stain, perfect for displaying books and collected pottery.

A Fire Feature That Reflects a Lifestyle
More than anything, this fireplace redesign was about creating a space that supported the way our clients wanted to live: simply, stylishly, and without the smoke and mirrors (well, except for the mist).
By replacing a traditional wood-burning fireplace with a modern water vapor unit, we were able to offer them all the ambiance of a crackling fire with none of the drawbacks. Add in the Southwest-inspired palette and the result is both grounded and glamorous—perfect for cozy winter nights, laid-back summer evenings, and safe playtime with the grandkids.

Thinking of Making the Switch?
If your current fireplace is more of an eyesore than a focal point—or if you’re planning a remodel and want to future-proof your home—consider a water vapor fireplace. It’s a smart, safe, and seriously chic upgrade.
Your guests will be totally mesmerized trying to figure out how those “flames” are dancing across your living room.
(And no, you don’t need to tell them it’s just steam. Let the magic live on.)
